Gap formula and worked example

Gap % = (live indicative price − perp price at the last official close) ÷ perp price at the last official close × 100.

Worked example (16:05 UTC on Oct 27, 2026): (7,728.40 − 7,674.60) ÷ 7,674.60 × 100 = +0.70%. The perpetual is 53.80 above its price at the last official close.

Why does this market have a weekend price?

The S&P 500 cash index stops updating when US equities close Friday at 4:00 p.m. ET. Mutual funds mark to that close; risk desks shift to futures and macro hedges until Monday morning.

Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET brings ES futures back online ahead of Asia. A continuous SPX tracker perpetual quotes all weekend, offering a thermometer for broad US equity sentiment—again indicative, not the official S&P Dow Jones index print.

Macro catalysts (CPI week, FOMC, geopolitics) frequently hit over weekends. Compare the live gap to prior weekends to gauge whether markets are extrapolating Friday's trend or fading it into reopen.

How to read the gap

The gap percentage compares the current indicative perpetual to the reference close at the last official session end in Eastern time. A positive gap means perps trade above that reference; negative means below. It does not tell you Monday's official open—especially for equities, cash open can differ from Sunday futures reopen. Use the sparkline for path since close, and the history table for frequency of follow-through.

Read concurrent moves across asset classes on the home board. Metals traders often cross-check silver; equity readers compare Nasdaq and S&P 500.

Session clock in Eastern time

Every countdown and close reference on this page is computed with America/New_York, including daylight saving transitions. We do not approximate UTC offsets manually. That means the Friday close anchor moves between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC depending on the season, while the labeled local time stays 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. as appropriate for the asset class.

During the official pause, liquidity on decentralized venues can thin. You may see the gap expand quickly on headlines, then compress as Sunday reopen approaches and hedgers return. The weekend high and low fields summarize hourly candle extremes since the close reference—they are descriptive, not official exchange ranges.

Using history without overfitting

The twelve-week table is a small sample. Same-direction hit rate tells you how often the reopen gap signed the same way as the pre-reopen weekend move; it is not a win rate for any strategy. Median absolute difference between weekend move and reopen gap helps you see whether Sunday open tends to mean-revert or extend. Combine with the full gap archive when you need more than a dozen rows.

If you are comparing FX against metals, remember FX reopens Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET while COMEX-style products typically return at 6:00 p.m. ET. A synchronized global shock may show up in dollar pairs before it appears in gold's Sunday screen.

FAQ

Weekend S&P 500 indicator: how to predict Monday's open?

As of 16:05 UTC on Oct 27, 2026, the S&P 500 (SP500 tracker) is indicated at 7,728.40 on 24/7 perpetual futures (Hyperliquid xyz market), +0.70% vs the perp price of 7,674.60 at the last official close (Mon, Oct 26, 4:00 p.m. ET). Compare the live SP500 perpetual with its Friday 4:00 p.m. ET close reference: the percentage gap is the weekend indicator. In our dataset the sign of the weekend move matched the sign of the Monday 9:30 a.m. ET cash-open gap in 8 of 21 weekends (38%), with a median absolute cash-open gap of 0.33%. Gaps often compress or reverse at the cash open, so treat it as context rather than a prediction.

How big is the typical weekend move in the S&P 500 tracker?

Across the last 22 weekends in our dataset, the SP500 perpetual moved a median of 0.24% (mean 0.26%, max 0.59%) in absolute terms between Friday's close reference and the last quote before Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET.

What close is used for the gap?

Friday 4:00 p.m. ET US cash equity close time, mapped to the perpetual candle at that instant.

When is the S&P officially open?

Cash equities Monday–Friday 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET.

How is Monday cash open shown in history?

For equity index assets we record a Monday 9:30 a.m. ET cash-open candle where data exists.

Is this the official S&P 500 index?

No—it is a perpetual tracker quote from the data source named in methodology.

Why might weekend SPX perps diverge from ES futures?

Basis, funding, and liquidity differences between venues.

Holiday schedules?

NYSE/Nasdaq cash holidays and 1:00 p.m. ET early closes are modeled from the NYSE calendar (checked 2026-10-23); CME futures holiday hours are not.

Practical weekend workflow

Many desk traders start with a simple checklist: note Friday's official close, mark where the perpetual traded at that instant, then watch whether the live quote drifts with news or with correlated markets. If dollar FX perps strengthen while gold perps soften, that divergence may reflect relative liquidity rather than a clean macro signal—cross-check both legs on the forex weekend page.

Before Sunday reopen, compare the gap to the median absolute difference in the history table. Large gaps that are unusual versus the last quarter of weekends deserve extra skepticism: thin books exaggerate moves. After reopen, official venues re-establish their own prints; this site does not stream those feeds in v1.

Nothing here is a recommendation to trade. The venue link points to an external comparison page; trading hours follow each venue's own rules. Always read each venue's own terms and risk statements independently of this tracker.
