Gap formula and worked example

Gap % = (live indicative price − perp price at the last official close) ÷ perp price at the last official close × 100.

Worked example (16:05 UTC on Oct 27, 2026): (4,062.20 − 4,019.90) ÷ 4,019.90 × 100 = +1.05%. The perpetual is $42.30 above its price at the last official close.

Why does this market have a weekend price?

Spot gold on COMEX observes a weekly maintenance window: trading stops Friday at 5:00 p.m. New York time and resumes Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET. Between those times there is no official COMEX last sale, yet geopolitical headlines, US dollar moves, and real-yield shifts still change fair value in traders' models.

Macro gold perpetuals on decentralized venues continue quoting. Liquidity is thinner than mid-week, so prints can wick, but the mid price often tracks where professionals expect Monday's open. We compare the live indicative quote to the perpetual close in the one-hour candle ending at Friday 5:00 p.m. ET—clearly labeled as indicative, not exchange settlement.

Gold's weekend sensitivity tends to rise when equity risk is elevated or when markets price central-bank surprises ahead of Monday's data calendar. Watch the gap, but remember weekend perps can carry a basis vs spot.

How to read the gap

The gap percentage compares the current indicative perpetual to the reference close at the last official session end in Eastern time. A positive gap means perps trade above that reference; negative means below. It does not tell you Monday's official open—especially for equities, cash open can differ from Sunday futures reopen. Use the sparkline for path since close, and the history table for frequency of follow-through.

Read concurrent moves across asset classes on the home board. Metals traders often cross-check silver; equity readers compare Nasdaq and S&P 500.

Session clock in Eastern time

Every countdown and close reference on this page is computed with America/New_York, including daylight saving transitions. We do not approximate UTC offsets manually. That means the Friday close anchor moves between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC depending on the season, while the labeled local time stays 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. as appropriate for the asset class.

During the official pause, liquidity on decentralized venues can thin. You may see the gap expand quickly on headlines, then compress as Sunday reopen approaches and hedgers return. The weekend high and low fields summarize hourly candle extremes since the close reference—they are descriptive, not official exchange ranges.

Using history without overfitting

The twelve-week table is a small sample. Same-direction hit rate tells you how often the reopen gap signed the same way as the pre-reopen weekend move; it is not a win rate for any strategy. Median absolute difference between weekend move and reopen gap helps you see whether Sunday open tends to mean-revert or extend. Combine with the full gap archive when you need more than a dozen rows.

If you are comparing FX against metals, remember FX reopens Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET while COMEX-style products typically return at 6:00 p.m. ET. A synchronized global shock may show up in dollar pairs before it appears in gold's Sunday screen.

FAQ

What is the gold price right now on the weekend?

As of 16:05 UTC on Oct 27, 2026, gold (XAU/USD) is indicated at $4,062.20 on 24/7 perpetual futures (Hyperliquid xyz market), +1.05% vs the perp price of $4,019.90 at the last official close (Mon, Oct 26, 5:00 p.m. ET). COMEX gold futures have no official price between Friday 5:00 p.m. ET and Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET, so the weekend gold price is the indicative 24/7 perpetual quote shown on this page.

How far does the weekend gold price usually move?

Across the last 12 weekends in our dataset, gold's perpetual moved a median of 0.17% (mean 0.27%, max 0.74%) in absolute terms between the Friday close reference and the last quote before Sunday reopen.

When does gold officially close for the weekend?

On the COMEX-style schedule we use, the weekly close is Friday 5:00 p.m. ET with reopen Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET. Daily maintenance also pauses trading 5:00–6:00 p.m. ET on weekdays.

Is the weekend gold price an official COMEX price?

No. It is an indicative perpetual mid/mark price from a 24/7 on-chain market. It is useful context, not a settlement print.

Why can weekend gold diverge from where spot opens Monday?

Thin liquidity, funding dynamics, and the absence of official arbitrage to COMEX can widen spreads. Macro shocks over the weekend can also reprice gold before pits reopen.

What is 'perp price at last close' on this page?

The close of the one-hour perpetual candle ending at the official Friday 5:00 p.m. ET close time—not the exchange's published settlement.

Do US holidays change this schedule?

Exchange holidays can differ from our v1 calendar. We show a site-wide note that holiday closures are not reflected yet.

How often is the quote updated?

The server refreshes about every five minutes; your browser polls every thirty seconds for live fields.

Practical weekend workflow

Many desk traders start with a simple checklist: note Friday's official close, mark where the perpetual traded at that instant, then watch whether the live quote drifts with news or with correlated markets. If dollar FX perps strengthen while gold perps soften, that divergence may reflect relative liquidity rather than a clean macro signal—cross-check both legs on the forex weekend page.

Before Sunday reopen, compare the gap to the median absolute difference in the history table. Large gaps that are unusual versus the last quarter of weekends deserve extra skepticism: thin books exaggerate moves. After reopen, official venues re-establish their own prints; this site does not stream those feeds in v1.

Nothing here is a recommendation to trade. The venue link points to an external comparison page; trading hours follow each venue's own rules. Always read each venue's own terms and risk statements independently of this tracker.
